Secretary of State must pull out all the stops to save H&W jobs

Tuesday 06 August 2019

Green Party Councillor Anthony Flynn has said that the Secretary of State must pull out all the stops to save the jobs of Harland and Wolff workers as the company enters administration.

Cllr Flynn said: “I discussed the situation at Harland and Wolff with the Secretary of State on Saturday and pressed him on government intervention.

“There is precedent for government action to save jobs – Jaguar Land Rover received a ¬£500 million¬†loan to build electric vehicles at it’s Birmingham plant earlier this year.

“I am due to meet with the Secretary of State again this week alongside Cllr Brian Heading, officials from Invest NI and the Department for Economy.

“Once again I will stress the importance of the Shipyard to the people of East Belfast and beyond.

“I believe the iconic yellow cranes can serve us well into the future with a focus on the renewable energy sector.

“The people of East Belfast are pained at the demise of the shipyard.

“However, I believe that with government assistance jobs can be saved and the shipyard can play a role in the just transition towards renewable energy.”
