Safe access to healthcare highlighted during International Women’s Day
Wednesday 08 March 2017
Clare Bailey MLA has marked International Women’s Day by highlighting the challenges faced by many women as they access reproductive healthcare.
The theme of International Women’s Day 2017 is “Be Bold For Change” with the global day of action challenging people to take groundbreaking action that truly drives the greatest change for women.
“International Women’s Day calls on us to challenge bias and inequality and forge women’s advancement.
“In the Northern Ireland context, women and families face ongoing harassment and intimidation as they enter and exit healthcare facilities.
“This unacceptable situation marks out inequality and a lack of value, respect and ethical treatment.
“International Women’s Day is an important day, but just a single day, while harassment outside healthcare facilities happens on an almost daily basis.”
The Green Party deputy leader added:
“You can contribute to Women’s Day and lasting positive change through participation in my consultation on safe access to healthcare.
“I am proposing legislation which would create safe zones around healthcare facilities, thereby safeguarding women’s safety as they access services.
“As part of the legislative process, I launched a consultation on the matter in February.
“You can be bold for change and participate in the global day of action by responding to the consultation.
“The proposed legislation is not about the legal status of abortion, but instead fulfilling the ideals of International Women’s Day by promoting positive change for women through safe access to healthcare facilities.”
