Political change should only be sought through peaceful means

Green Party in Northern Ireland Leader Steven Agnew MLA has moved to clarify his party’s position regarding the legal status of terrorist organisations.

“I want to take this opportunity to make it clear beyond any doubt, the position of the Green Party in Northern Ireland on this issue. We have always been committed to peace and non-violence and fully supportive of the rule of law.

“The Green Party was born out of the peace movement and a strong commitment to non-violence is one of our key founding principles.

“We have consistently opposed all forms of terrorism whether in Northern Ireland or elsewhere. We are firm in our belief that anyone who is involved in organised violence, -be it the violent act itself, the planning of violent acts, or the financing of violent acts should be firmly dealt through the justice system.

“The Green Party in Northern Ireland has never had, nor does it intend to have, a policy to decriminalise terrorist organisations.

“We would defend strongly everyone’s right to freedom of political thought but political change should only be sought through peaceful means. Seeking change through violence cannot be acceptable in a democratic society.”
