People’s Vote a must as Prime Minister May struggles to square the Brexit circles

Tuesday 16 October 2018

Steven Agnew MLA has said that a People’s Vote on any final Brexit deal is a necessity as the UK struggles to square the circle of exiting the single market and customs union while maintaining borderless trade.

The Green Party leader said:

“The Leave campaign peddled the myth that leaving the European Union would be a seamless and glorious process.

“Similarly, the government position is premised on a falsehood that the UK can exit the single market and customs union while maintaining borderless trade.

“Prime Minister May will never square the circle of exiting the customs union and single market while maintaining borderless trade.

“A final say on any Brexit deal is a necessity. Many of the myths of the Leave campaign have been busted.

“There is no extra £350 million per week to go to the NHS.

“Leaving the single market and customs union is incompatible with borderless trade.

“There has been economic disruption in the face of a difficult negotiating process.

“The Brexit deal that was promised does not look like the one that is shaping up at present. That’s why a People’s Vote on any final deal is a necessity.

“A People’s Vote on the deal would be entirely in keeping with the democratic tradition of Parliamentary and public scrutiny of the big decisions made by government.”
