People of Ireland show that they trust women – Northern Ireland must be next – Clare Bailey MLA

Saturday 26 May 2018

The Green Party has expressed relief and satisfaction after the historic decision repeal the 8th amendment to the Irish constitution.

Clare Bailey MLA said: “This is an historic day for women in Ireland. The people have affirmed that they trust women.

“I would like to pay tribute to the campaigners and activists. The people who facilitated discussion and pounded pavements to secure change. I also want to recognise all those who came forward to tell their personal stories of abortion to make things better for people in a similar position in the future.

“Today marks the beginning of the end of Irish abortion exportation. I am minded of the women who suffered as a result of Ireland’s failed policy of criminalisation. Every women who travelled to have an abortion without the support of loved ones at home. Every women who risked her liberty by taking abortion pills without medical advice or care”.

Clare Bailey continued: “While Ireland moves forward, women in Northern Ireland remain threatened with prison for seeking an abortion.

“The Stormont stalemate means that Northern Ireland remains stuck in a regressive rut and will now be seen as one of the most oppressive regimes in Western Europe

“I’m now calling for change through Westminster. The UK breaches the rights of women in Northern Ireland by unduly restricting access to abortion. I will continue to work to end this dismal situation.”
