Councillor Rachel Woods Ards North Down

Over 1,000 Syrian refugees welcomed into Northern Ireland

Cllr Rachel Woods has expressed her pride after the 1,000th Syrian refugee was welcomed to Northern Ireland.

The Ards and North Down Borough Councillor said:

“I am delighted that we have been able to welcome over 1,000 Syrian refugees into Northern Ireland. These families are fleeing a horrific conflict and it is right that we offer them sanctuary.

“This is Refugee Week and we remember how important it is to extend the hand of friendship and support to refugees and asylum seekers from Syria and beyond.

“There has been a great co-ordinated effort by the NI Executive Office through the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme. It’s been wonderful to see Syrian families settle into their new surroundings, live as part of their community and indeed, prosper”.

Cllr Woods concluded:

“I hope these efforts continue and I would emphasise the importance of practical assistance, especially around the provision of housing and access to education”.
