Kelly Andrews - North Down Greens – Policing & Justice / Health spokesperson

Kelly Andrews joined the Green Party in 2003 and became co-chair in 2005. She manages the Green Party’s first Northern Ireland constituency office which is located in Bangor for Green Party MLA Brian Wilson.

Kelly works on behalf of the people of North Down from the Bangor office which was officially opened by Green Party Scottish Leader Robin Harper MSP in February 2008.

Kelly recently campaigned on behalf of local residents to prevent North Down Borough Council from selling off a green space at Ballykillaire for development securing Tree Preservation Orders on the woodland affected.

“The Green Party is very active in North Down; to date we have spread the green message throughout the borough, which culminated in the people of North Down electing Northern Ireland first green MLA Brian Wilson. Since then the branch has grown in numbers, we have hosted a numbers of events and campaigns. We meet on the first Monday of each month. More and more people who wish to make a positive difference to the community are attending.”

Kelly contested the 2005 Local Government Elections, narrowly missing out on a seat. She currently holds the post of National Coordinator for the Green Party Ireland and is a Commissioner on the Northern Ireland Parades Commission.

Kelly came into politics following a background in community development. She has worked as a Training Coordinator for ‘Women Into Politics’ facilitating various programmes dealing with conflict resolution, equality, democracy and politics. Kelly has campaigned to raise the profile of the rights of a mother to breastfeed, domestic violence provision and environmentally sustainable living.

Kelly recently addressed delegates at the Green Party National Convention 2008 where she said: “The Green Party is for anyone who wants to make a positive difference in the world we live. Our policies are driven by the protection of our planet for future generations, ecological sustainability as well as equity and social justice. This vision of the future has to be based on democracy, transparency, gender equality and the right of all people to express themselves and participate fully in decision-making process.”

Kelly has been a long time anti-nuclear campaigner and recently laid a wreath in the grounds of Parliament Buildings in remembrance of those who died in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986.

“I’m very concerned that members of the DUP have voiced support for nuclear. Northern Ireland must remain a nuclear free zone for the sake of our agriculture, food and health of the population.”
