Cllr Cadogan Enright – Downpatrick Greens – Enterprise, Trade & Investment

Green Party councillor Cadogan Enright represents the Green Party and the electorate of Downpatrick on Down District Council.

Co-opted onto the council following the retirement of Green Party Cllr. Bill Corry in 2007, Cllr Enright is a life long environmentalist. He joined the Green Party in the mid 1990's over his concerns regarding climate change.

Cllr Enright is involved in a wide range of community organisations from Strangford Lough to the Mourne Mountains including the protection of wildlife, Fair Trade food and renewable energy. He is a member of the Strangford Lough Management Committee, the Down District Policing Partnership, a member of Lecale Environmentalist Society since 2005 (protecting areas of special scientific importance) and the Sustainable Energy Association. He is also involved in work to formulate by-laws for coastal areas in County Down to promote tourism while securing and protecting wildlife areas.

Cllr Enright is the Green Party Energy spokesperson and was the power house behind the formation of the first every renewables trade association, the Sustainable Energy Association, organising meetings and forming a body which has become recognised by government and the voulunary sector.

“It was vitally important that the Assembly paid attention to the renewables energy sector that’s why a trade association was so very important. It is much more difficult for the politicans to ignore the alternative energy sector if we speak with one voice – a united voice. I have also campaigned for regulations to allow small scale renewable energy to be connected to the National Grid and for environmentally friendly building regulations in the construction industry. It is time the energy issue was addressed.”

Cllr Enright is a chartered certified accountant with postgraduate qualifications in building standards and energy management. He also owns the Downpatrick Sustainable Development Ltd, which promotes environmentally friendly building standards and small-scale renewable energy.

On entering office Cllr Enright made a commitment to address Co. Down's poor performance in an Energy Saving Trust survey in terms of carbon emissions and energy saving:

"Down District Council is one of the worst performing UK councils in terms of carbon emissions. I am seeking guidance from the Energy Saving Trust to find out how we can reverse this in time for the next local elections. All parties will have to justify their actions on this issue before the electorate and I look forward to working with other members on this issue.”

Cllr Enright has also worked as the Green Party Director of Elections in the Local Elections of 2005 and Assembly Election of 2007.

Married to Brenda for 27-years, the Enright's have five children, the eldest, Peter has in the past stood as a Green Party candidate in the Republic.
