Cllr Ciaran Mussen - Newry & Mourne Greens – Agriculture

Cllr Ciaran Mussen was first elected to Newry & Mourne District Council in 1985 as an independent public representative. Twenty years later seeking a radical alternative to the stagnant politics of N.Ireland he made local history by being elected as Newry & Mourne Council’s first Green Cllr in 2005. At that time that he described the Green Party as ‘the most progressive, enlightened and necessary party on earth.’ In the 2007 Assembly elections he doubled support for the South Down Greens by securing over 1600 first preference votes.

Well known in the area as a musician and community worker, he set up, edited and wrote for the Clonduff Post for over 13 years.

In 1986 he set up the first community recycling scheme in Northern Ireland located in Hilltown and has been a founder member of Clonduff Development Enterprise, the Hilltown Community Association and the Boley Fair.

He was the honorary president of the Hilltown Angling Club for many years and has campaigned throughout his political career for measures to help improve the quality of water in Northern Ireland’s rivers.
