Mark McCormick set up the first ever Greens Society at Queens University, Belfast in 2007, and is currently their Co-Chair.
A strong opponent of nuclear power Mark hit the national headlines when he presented the Green Wash Award to the Northern Ireland Environment Minister Sammy Wilson for his pro-nuclear aspirations for Northern Ireland. Mark has also campaigned locally against proposals to build a Nuclear Power station near his home at St. Johns Point.
“By endorsing Nuclear Power we would not be solving the issue of energy for future generations all we would be doing is distracting ourselves from implementing the real solution of renewable energy”
A young environmentalist with an interest in politics he is also an active member of the South Down Green Party. Mark was the Down District Fairtrade Committee in his native Downpatrick managing several media campaigns. He is currently rallying support to have Downpatricck declared a Fairtrade Town.
“I believe Fairtrade is a wonderful endeavour that ensures disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries get a better and fair deal for the vital work they do. It was for this reason that I felt the need to co-ordinate and promote Fairtrade in Downpatrick were people already have a growing interest in the Fairtrade movement.”
One of Mark’s main interests is Wildlife Conservation and Animal Welfare. He campaigned in support of the Hunting Act in England and Wales and is currently campaigning to have this act introduced into N. Ireland. Mark was also a part of the team which developed the Green Party’s animal welfare policy.
Mark was the first ever Young Green from Northern Ireland to be elected onto the National Executive Committee of the Young Greens Oige Ghlas as the National Campaigns Officer in 2009.
