Denice has been actively campaigning on environmental issues in the Dungannon area for many years before joining the Green Party. Five years ago she set up the Ballysaggart Environmental Group which campaigns for the preservation of the Ballysaggart Lake, known locally as the Black Lough.
The Black Lough supports around 102 species of birds with around 500 migratory birds stopping over during the winter months. The Lake also supports one of the largest populations on the island of the endangered Golden Eye.
Denice has been campaigning for the area to protected and held the third successful Environmental Awareness Fun Day at the Lake in August 2008 which was attended by upwards of 300 people.
“I’m keen to protect this area’s biodiversity. Almost all of Tyrone’s lakes are dedicated to trout fishing, caravanning and walkways; it would be great if this lake could be preserved so that the flora and fauna are given the maximum opportunity to thrive.”
Denice was also a member of the Dungannon West Community Forum which developed an action regeneration plan for a number of areas in the town including Milltown, Ballygawlly Road housing estate, Fairmount Park and Lisnahull.
A support of the local arts scene Denice has been an active member of the local Arts Forum for the past two years and is currently promoting an arts exhibition under the title ‘Mother Nature’. She is believes a lot more could be done within the Dungannon area to promote the arts.
“Dungannon was once one of the most important areas in Ireland being the home of the mighty Celtic O’Neill Family. I don’t believe Dungannon exploits and promotes its ancient history enough. It’s also almost impossible to find any where in Dungannon to host an arts exhibition; this is very unfair to the many wonderful local artists in Tyrone.”
Formerly a nurse Denice trained at the Royal School of Nursing and the University of Ulster, specializing in midwifery, psychiatry nursing and house visiting. She has worked at the Mid Ulster Hospital in Magherfelt, Tyrone / Fermanagh Hospital and the Jubilee Maternity Hospital.
