Dr. Peter Doran – South Belfast Greens – Environmental spokesperson

Dr Peter Doran has worked with the Greens across Ireland and Britain for over twenty-five years. He has played a key role, in recent years, in reviving the Party’s fortunes and supporting electoral advances in areas such as communications and media profile.

Peter has fought elections for the Party on both sides of the border and is currently the Party’s representative going forward in South Belfast, which is a target constituency in the upcoming local and Assembly elections. He has also worked full-time for the Party in Dublin as a research and policy coordinator.

With a background in civil society organisations (formerly a Campaigns Director for Friends of the Earth/Earthwatch, Ireland; Coordinator of the cross-border Foyle Basin Council based in Derry), he now works as a full time academic at the Law School in Queens University, Belfast, where he teaches and researches sustainable development and governance.  He has worked at all levels of governance, including the United Nations, at the Northern Ireland Assembly, and in partnership with local government on both sides of the border.

Peter has been involved in a number of successful campaigns and other initiatives, including:

The launch of an initiative to have Inishowen (North Donegal) nominated as a green tourist destination;

The launch of a highly successful campaign for cross border cancer radiotherapy services in the North West;

The Foyle Ethical Investment Campaign to oppose the present of the Raytheon company in Derry and propose alternative, clean investment;

Fair Trade in Derry;

Buy Nothing Day;

Opposition to nuclear testing in the Pacific.

He sits on a number of committees, including the environmental NGO funding body in the Republic of Ireland.

Peter is married to Stephanie and has two children, Oisin and Amharghin.
