Nothing has changed for the people of Northern Ireland despite Brexit frenzy

Tuesday 12 March 2019

Clare Bailey MLA said: “Despite frenzied Westminster activity, the situation has not changed or improved for the people of Northern Ireland just seventeen days before the scheduled EU exit.”

The Leader of the Green Party Northern Ireland was responding to Theresa May’s claim of an improved Brexit deal.

Clare Bailey MLA said:

“Westminster appears to be frenzied with legal opinions abound and continued politicking around Theresa May’s claim of an improved Brexit deal.

“It’s hard to conceive that MPs will support this measure given the scale of defeat the government suffered previously.

“MPs should realise that nothing has changed or improved for the people of Northern Ireland.

“The backstop remains the least damaging Brexit outcome for our people and our interests.

“The backstop must be protected in the face of pressure from hard right Tory factions and the DUP. “It’s the absolute minimum that our business community, civic society and border communities can expect.”
