New HIV Prevention Clinic should go some way to curb escalating rates of diagnosis

Wednesday 12 September 2018

Green Party rep. Mal O’Hara has said that a new HIV Prevention Clinic and access to HIV prevention drug PrEP can go some way to curbing the rise of new HIV diagnoses.

Mal O’Hara said:  “Access to PrEP and the new HIV Prevention Clinic should go some way to addressing the issue of 100 new HIV diagnoses across Northern Ireland each year.

“It must be acknoweldged that the lack of adequately resourced HIV and sexual health services has played a role in escalating HIV diagnosis rates.”

The North Belfast rep. continued:

“At a policy level, it is clear that Northern Ireland needs a comprehensive approach to sexual health.

“That includes a new Sexual Health Promotion Strategy, with the previous strategy having expired in 2013.

“Moreover, sex education in schools needs to be revisited if we are to improve sexual health outcomes for our young people.

“That should involve a consent based approach to sex education which includes our queer and trans young people.”
