More support needed for transgender people

Today, Friday 20th of November is the 17th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. This memorial is designed to raise awareness of hate and violence against transgender people and to remember those who have been murdered.

Transgender is an umbrella term for those that are transgender, non-binary, gender variant or questioning their gender.

Much more needs to be done to support transgender people

Speaking on behalf of the Green Party, Deputy Leader, Clare Bailey said

“Today we remember the transgender people that are not with us anymore due to hatred and violence. As we reflect on this solemn day, this must encourage us to do more to enhance awareness and acceptance of transgender people. One way of doing this is to ensure that any new gender equality strategy is fully inclusive of the specific needs of transgender people.

“We must also revisit the process for gender recognition, with particular regard to the needs of young transgender people and those who are non-binary in their gender identity, and we must place a renewed focus on the significant health inequalities experienced by transgender people.
