Ministerial accountability must be the cornerstone of any return to devolution

Monday 15 October 2018

Steven Agnew MLA has said that Ministerial accountability must be the cornerstone of any return to devolution and the formation of an Executive.

The Green Party leader’s comments followed the latest round of RHI revelations in which Dr Andrew McCormick claimed that the Ministerial code was “almost impossible to enforce”.

The Ministerial Code is specified in the Good Friday Agreement and sets out the rules and procedures for the exercise of duties and responsibilities of Ministers and junior Ministers.

Steven Agnew MLA said:

“I first called on the Executive to promote accountability and transparency¬†through an independent process to investigate alleged breaches of the Ministerial Code of Conduct back in 2015.

“Three years later, the RHI inquiry is unearthing evidence of the grubby conduct of Executive Ministers, our devolved institutions are gathering dust and public trust in politics is at a serious low.

“Any return to devolution must be accompanied by a genuine means by which alleged Ministerial wrong doing can be properly investigated and dealt with.”
