North Down MLA shows support for midwives over pay

Speaking as Northern Ireland’s midwives went on strike for the first time in their 134-year history, Steven Agnew MLA said today, 30 April:

“Northern Ireland’s hard working midwives are under increasing pressure as shown by their decision to strike, which I know was not taken lightly.

“The executive last year rejected a pay rise for midwives of 1%, as recommended by an independent pay review body last year.

“It concerns me that there has been no announcement about pay for this year”.

The Green Party leader called for action on the pay issue, saying:

“The incoming Health Minister needs to listen to what midwives on the ground are saying and make some decisions quickly, not least implementing a 1% pay rise to assure them that they are valued members of our health service workforce”.
