Malachai O’Hara selected as Deputy Leader

Sunday 10 March 2019

The Green Party Northern Ireland has selected Malachai O’Hara as the new Deputy Leader.

Malachai was selected by the party membership following an Annual General Meeting today (10th March 2019).

Malachai O’Hara is the party’s North Belfast representative, having been a party member since 2014. Mal spoke of his pride in being selected as Deputy Leader and his enthusiasm for working alongside Green Party leader Clare Bailey MLA.

“I am proud to take on the role as Green Party Deputy Leader, supporting Clare Bailey MLA. Clare has brought new energy to the party since she took up the leadership mantle – there is a real enthusiasm amongst party members and supporters.

“Our focus is on the local government elections in May and we stand a real chance of seeing new Green Party councillors step up on behalf of their local communities.

“Clare and the party are also focussed on tackling the really big challenges out there – catastrophic climate change, Brexit and lack of progress on equality issues here in Northern Ireland.

“My background is in community leadership and I am a long standing LGBTQ activist. I have been on the board of local suicide prevention charity Lighthouse since 2011.

“I’m North Belfast born and bred and I’m a passionate advocate for communities that suffered the most during the conflict and who continue to face challenges, despite relative peace. These are proud communities but austerity, lack of clean, green spaces and mental ill health are testing people day and daily.

“Green means taking on the challenges and I’m ready to do just that.”

Green Party leader Clare Bailey MLA welcomed Malachai O’Hara’s selection as Deputy Leader.

“These are exciting times for Malachai, the party and myself. I’ve known Mal for a long time now and I stood at many a rally, protest, door step and count centre with him!

“Mal is well known within North Belfast for his activism and many more people across Northern Ireland will get to know of him and hear from him in the coming months. I congratulate Mal on his selection as Deputy Leader and I can’t wait to get to work with him.”
