Mal O’Hara questions DUP and Brexit business group links

Tuesday 16 April 2019

Green Party NI Deputy Leader Mal O’Hara has said the Electoral Commission must keep a close watch on the relationship between pro-Brexit group, the Constitutional Research Council (CRC) and the DUP.

It has emerged that the DUP arranged for the CRC to meet with NI public bodies to discuss “funding opportunities”. The CRC donated £435,000 to the DUP during the EU referendum campaign. A further £13,000 was donated to the DUP by the CRC in the months after the referendum.

Mal O’Hara said:  “The DUP and Cllr Lee Reynolds in particular have been working hard to open up investment opportunities for this Scottish based business group.

“This is the same business group that broke electoral law by failing to declare a £435,000 donation to the DUP.

“Public trust and confidence in politics demands that there can be no conflict of interest between parties and their donors – real or perceived. “That’s why the Green Party publishes all donations over £500 and only work within an ethical donation framework. “I would hope that the Electoral Commission are keeping a close watch on the relationship between the DUP and the Constitutional Research Group.”
