Historical institutional abuse survivors have been let down again

24 April 2017

Green Party leaders Steven Agnew MLA and Clare Bailey MLA attended an event responding to Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry Redress Recommendations.

Green Party leader Steven Agnew sponsored the event on behalf of Amnesty International. Margaret McGuckin of SAVIA and Jon McCourt of Survivors North West attended the event along with many individual survivors.

Also in attendance was Green deputy leader Clare Bailey MLA, who said:

“The parties of the previous Executive have let down the survivors of historical institutional abuse.

“The continuing Stormont impasse means that the needs of survivors cannot be addressed following the recommendations of the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIAI).

“We’ve written to Secretary of State James Brokenshire and requested that in the absence of devolved government, the Secretary of State takes forward the requirements of survivors.

 The South Belfast MLA concluded:

“The courage and fortitude of survivors is sadly lacking amongst the leaders of the traditional parties in Northern Ireland.

“These leaders are content to allow devolved government slip away and with it, the hopes and expectations of these brave survivors”.
