Health cuts impact everyday lives while stalemate continues – Steven Agnew MLA

Thursday 24 August 2017

Green Party leader Steven Agnew has said that, “The everyday lives of the people of Northern Ireland are being severely impacted by continuing political stalemate”, following the launch of a consultation on £70 million of health service cuts.
The North Down MLA said: “Spending decisions should be taken by the Department under the leadership and strategic direction of the Health Minister.
“The continuing inability of the DUP and Sinn Fein to work together means that these decisions are pushed onto the Health Trusts and the public.
“I do not support cuts to public services, particularly when the DUP/Tory deal was supposed to have entailed a billion pound windfall for Northern Ireland.
“However, the reality is that these are short term and painful budget cuts. Health service reform can only be delivered through long term strategic planning and implementation.
“That’s why we need to restore devolution and have a Health Minister in place. The people on waiting lists and in need of medical support and assistance deserve more from their elected representatives.”
