Green Party MLAs sit down with Simon Coveney TD

Monday 30 April 2018

Green Party MLAs Clare Bailey and Steven Agnew have met with Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney TD in Belfast this evening.

The meeting focused on the Green Party proposal to create a Citizens Assembly.

The Citizens Assembly was discussed as a way through political sticking points including the misuse of the Petition of Concern.

Brexit was also discussed including the Green Party’s assertion that the people should have their say on the final Brexit deal.

Steven Agnew MLA said: “The meeting was positive and we found Minister Coveney receptive.

“We discussed similar maters with the Under Secretary of State Shailesh Vara MP last week.

“The Green Party has offered clear proposals for breaking this political deadlock.

“The Good Friday Agreement took an inclusive and innovative approach in getting through deadlock.

“Twenty years later, I would encourage the British and Irish governments to invoke the spirit of that agreement and consider our proposals.”
