Green Party MLA welcomes domestic violence pilot scheme

Thursday 22 March 2018

Green Party MLA Clare Bailey has welcomed a new pilot aimed at changing the behaviours of those who are convicted of domestic violence.

The pilot being launched by the Department of Justice this morning will allow the judge to refer offenders convicted of a domestic abuse or violence offence to a Domestic Violence Perpetrators Programme before sentencing.

The South Belfast MLA said: “We are facing an epidemic of domestic and sexual violence in our society at the moment, with almost 30,000 incidents reported to police in the last year.

“I very much welcome the introduction of this programme which aims to tackle the root causes of domestic violence.

“To take part in this programme, offenders must accept that their behaviour is harmful, unacceptable and needs to change, and that is a realisation that needs to be made in all parts of society,” Clare Bailey said
