Green Party MLA comments on racist leafletting

Green Party MLA Clare Bailey has welcomed the PSNI’s treatment of the distribution of racist leaflets in the Lower Ravenhill area as a hate crime.

“The people behind this disturbing leaflet are intent on stirring up hatred in this community and it is the last thing that residents want,” the South Belfast MLA said.

“These leaflets, apparently distributed in the daytime, are an attempt to frighten and intimidate families who have every right to live their lives in peace.

“We have already seen homes and cars in the Lower Ravenhill being singled out for attacks in recent months and there is clearly a small group of trouble-makers intent on building an atmosphere of fear and tension in the area.

“We would not tolerate such words against any other group in society and it is time for the people of Belfast to rally round and show that this is not who we are in this modern city.

“Belfast is a multi-faith city, and we will continue to welcome people from different backgrounds.  It is important for us all to respect each other’s religious views, and to uphold the right to worship.

“I want to assure Muslim residents that they have the full support of the Green Party and the majority of people in this city.

“Families are still dealing with the fallout from previous racist incidents in this area and my office are doing everything we can to help. I would urge anyone who has experienced hate and harassment to please reach out to me and I will continue to do anything I can to help,” the Green Party MLA said.
