Green Party leader to speak against puppy farming at rally

Steven Agnew MLA will be attending the puppy farming protest rally at Belfast City Hall tomorrow, Saturday 6 June 2015.

Steven Agnew said,

“No one could fail to be moved by the sheer horror of the puppy farming uncovered by the recent Panorama programme.

“It is clear that certain individuals are seeking to profit from unwarranted animal suffering.

“More needs to be done to regulate and license breeders and ensure that they put the welfare of their dogs first. This unchecked breeding is contributing to the huge numbers of stray and unwanted dogs in Northern Ireland.

“I am saddened that our animal sanctuaries are filled to capacity with dogs that have been dumped.

“We are a nation of dog lovers but through a lack of regulation and enforcement our public agencies are not providing the protection that we expect for animals in our society”.

Steven Agnew MLA added,

“I would urge anyone looking to get a puppy to make sure they do their homework. They need to make sure that the puppy’s mum is healthy, look for clues that the dog actually lives there and ask to see vaccination and micro-chipping records.

“Or, better still, adopt an older dog from a local animal charity.

“We need to stop supporting this industry through purchasing puppies from unscrupulous breeders”.
