Green Party delighted at historic US ruling on same sex marriage

The Green Party in Northern Ireland has reacted with delight at the news that the US Supreme Court has today, Friday 26 June 2015, ruled that same-sex marriages are now legal across the entirety of the United States.

Party leader Steven Agnew MLA said,

“This is a historic moment for LGBTQ people in the United States of America.

“We are witnessing a societal shift both in the US and, indeed, throughout the world, with the rights of LGBTQ people finally getting the recognition that they have been fighting for for decades.

“While we celebrate this momentous ruling, we must remember that Northern Ireland is the only part of these islands that does not have equal civil marriage rights for LGBTQ friends and family.

“It is time that my colleagues in the Assembly realised that society is changing and we must work to ensure equality for all, not least through the implementation of civil marriage equality”.

Chair of the Queer Greens group Anthony Flynn added,

“I am delighted at this Supreme Court ruling. The fight for equality in the USA has given the LGBTQ community in Northern Ireland hope that change is possible.

“One way or another, civil marriage equality will become a reality in Northern Ireland and I look forward to that day”.
