Green Party councillor Georgina Milne condemns far right disrespect for council office

Wednesday January 10 2018

Green Party councillor Georgina Milne has condemned the conduct of Councillor Jolene Bunting who allowed a far right group to disrespect the office of the Lord Mayor of Belfast.

Britain First deputy leader Jayda Fransen posted a video on social media after putting on councillor robes and sitting in the Lord Mayor’s chair, during a visit facilitated by Councillor Bunting.

Councillor Milne said: “This is not the first time Councillor Bunting has teamed up with her far right friends to abuse her position as a councillor and bring the good name of Belfast City Council into disrepute.

“Before Christmas, I lodged a complaint with the Northern Ireland Local Government Commissioner for Standards over Councillor Bunting’s conduct.

“I believe she breached a number of aspects of the Councillor Code of Conduct when she targeted Belfast Islamic Centre with the same far right group who then broadcast hate speech on social media.

“Councillors are expected to hold themselves to a higher standard of behaviour than the general public and are there to look after the best interests of this city and all its people.

“Belfast does not want or need this circus and these disgusting antics are not welcome in our city. I am glad to see that other parties are joining to condemn this behaviour.”
