Green Leader calls for all of Northern Ireland’s MPs to vote against the triggering of Article 50

Green Party Leader, Steven Agnew MLA, has today (3rd November 2016) welcomed the High Court judgement in London which ruled that the UK Parliament, rather than simply the Prime Minister, must agree to start the process for the UK leaving the European Union.

Steven Agnew MLA said: “This is a victory for democracy and parliamentary sovereignty. Requiring the support of Parliament for the triggering of Article 50 would allow for the full spectrum of views on this issue to be articulated.

“The decision by the High Court is also a victory for those in Northern Ireland, who voted to remain in the EU and whose views until now have been ignored.

“Whilst this decision will likely be taken to the Supreme Court; in the event it is upheld, our MPs will have the opportunity to reflect the views of the people of Northern Ireland.

“It is important that all of Northern Ireland’s MPs and Lords do the job that they were sent to Westminster to do and represent our interests in the Houses of Parliament. This means voting against the triggering of Article 50 of the Treaty of the European Union by the UK whenever the question is put before them.”
