Green Councillors secure NI’s first climate emergency declaration motion

Thursday 28 February 2019

Ards and North Down Borough Council became the first local council to declare a climate emergency following a motion from Green Party Councillors Rachel Woods and Barry McKee last night (Wednesday 28 February).

Cllr Woods said: “The scientific evidence is clear – we must act now, on every possible level to address the devastating impact of catastrophic climate change.

“I want action on an EU level, action from the UK government and I want the Assembly up and running to implement policies across Northern Ireland.

Cllr Woods discussed the effect of the motion at a practical level:

“This motion requires Council to produce an urgent report assessing the impact of Council activities on greenhouse gas emissions, exploring what mitigation measures can be put in place.

“We have had government across Northern Ireland green wash issues and tinker around the edges of climate change. We need firm action to address climate as the greatest challenge of our time.”

“This motion is about empowering people to acknowledge and address climate change at a local level. I’m proud that Ards and North Down Borough Council is the first in Northern Ireland to recognise the scale of the challenge at hand and take serious steps to address it.”
