Good Friday Agreement is off the Brexit negotiating table

Monday 21 January 2019

Steven Agnew MLA has said that the Good Friday Agreement is off the table as part of Brexit negotiations.

There is speculation that Prime Minster Theresa May will seek to rewrite some of the Good Friday Agreement in a bid to break the Brexit stalemate.

Steven Agnew MLA said: “Theresa May has no mandate to rewrite any of the Good Friday Agreement – it’s simply not on the table.

“The Good Friday Agreement is the People’s Agreement – there was an overwhelming majority in support of the Agreement.

“The people of Northern Ireland voted to remain in the European Union. The people of Northern Ireland voted in support of the Good Friday Agreement.

“Theresa May should be guided by these realities, not by her confidence and supply arrangement with the DUP.” Steven Agnew MLA concluded:

“Let’s not forget, the DUP has never endorsed the Good Friday Agreement, despite entering into power sharing arrangements.”
