Executive has wasted an opportunity for positive government – but there is an alternative

17 January 2017

The Green Party leader Steven Agnew MLA has responded to the Assembly election announcement:

“The electorate gave the Executive parties an opportunity to provide stable and positive government. They’ve wasted this opportunity.

“Indeed the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) fiasco has typified the financial waste that has marked out the failure of this Executive.”

“Let’s not forget how the Executive has wasted everyone’s time through a consistent resistance to accountability and transparency.

“This waste comes at a huge human cost – the absence of a budget means that patients will wait longer on hospital waiting lists, charities will not receive funding and schools will struggle with further financial uncertainty.

“But, now there is a chance to reject this waste and weigh in behind the Green Party as a progressive and positive alternative.

“I would encourage all voters to ensure that they are on the electoral register. You can see the Electoral Commission website for more information.

“Don’t be discouraged to turn out to vote – I understand that trust and confidence in the political system is low, but it doesn’t have to be that way.”

The North Down MLA concluded:

“We’ll be announcing our Assembly candidates in the coming days.

“For now my message is straightforward – hate waste, vote green.”
