Domestic violence legislation progress welcomed

Wednesday 02 October 2019

Green Party NI leader Clare Bailey MLA has commented ahead of the second reading of the Domestic Violence Bill, set for today.

Clare Bailey said: “It is unfortunate that a local Assembly is not delivering this much need legislation.

“However, following the Supreme Court judgement and the instatement of parliament at Westminster, it’s vital that domestic violence victims are provided with legislative protection.

“Domestic abuse incidents hit a record high of almost 30,000 across Northern Ireland last year with one incident reported every 17 minutes.

“The legislative gap at present means that many people, particularly women and children are living in terror.

“This legislation will close the legislative divergence which separates victims of domestic abuse in NI and people living other UK regions.”
