Cllr Rachel Woods hails long-awaited microbead ban

Tuesday January 9 2018

Green Party Councillor Rachel Woods has welcomed the ban on plastic microbeads in the UK, which came into force today.

The microbeads can no longer be used in the manufacture of cosmetics and personal care products and a ban on sales will follow in July.

The Ards and North Down councillor said: “Thousands of tonnes of these tiny pieces of plastic are washing into the oceans every year, harming wildlife and entering our own food chain.

“I am glad to see the start of this long-awaited ban. Any move to reduce the levels of plastics in our waterways and ocean is welcome, but this is only a small component contributing to the huge quantities of plastic out there and many more products need to be tackled.
