Cllr Rachel Woods: Let’s try to reduce plastic waste this Christmas

Tuesday 18 December 2018

The Green Party in Northern Ireland has urged people to try to avoid plastic where they can this Christmas.

Councillor for Holywood and Clandeboye Rachel Woods said:

“The harmful impacts of plastic pollution are becoming better understood, with people keen to protect our marine life from the poison of plastic pollution.

“Christmas is a time when even if we are mindful not to buy plastic presents, supermarkets and other retailers bombard us with unnecessary plastic at every turn.

“Presents and toys come in a maze of plastic packaging and our fruit and veg are often wrapped in reams of unnecessary plastic.

“There are lots of fun ways to get creative with wrapping while avoiding shiny coated wrapping paper and unnecessary packaging.

“Gift boxes and gift bags can be used and recycled as a more sustainable choice.

“Big retailers and supermarkets still aren’t doing enough to reduce plastic waste. That’s why it’s a great idea to buy loose items if possible, bring your own shopping bags and don’t forget your reusable cup or bottle when out and about.

“Exposing supermarkets and retailers worst examples of pointless festive plastic is also a good way to drive change. Use the hashtag #PointlessPlastic to highlight the worst examples of plastic waste and tell big business we have had enough.”
