Cllr Anthony Flynn – priority remains saving shipyard jobs

Friday 09 August 2019

Green Party Cllr Anthony Flynn has again met with Trade Unions, departmental officials and trade bodies as Harland and Wolff workers continue to picket the shipyard site.

Cllr Flynn said: “The shipyard workers have not been forgotten as the administration process takes effect and the priority remains saving jobs.

“The conversation around the future of the shipyard is bound up with the future of manufacturing in Northern Ireland with Brexit on the horizon and as we face into climate breakdown.

“Today, we discussed the expertise of the shipyard workers in the renewable energy sector. There is an opportunity for Belfast to become a central player – not just in the assembly of wind turbines, but in the entire process of manufacturing, assembling and shipping green technology like turbines.

“Those conversations will continue through a manufacturing forum anticipated to take place in the coming weeks.  For now, the main concern remains the shipyard workers as they continue to fight for their future.”
