Clare Bailey welcomes safe online abortion services research findings

Wednesday 17 May 2017

Clare Bailey MLA has welcomed the publication of research showing that online abortion services offer a safe way to end a pregnancy at an early stage.
The research findings were published in the British Medical Journal following a survey of women.
Clare Bailey said:
“Women in Northern Ireland are being denied their to right to free, safe and legal reproductive healthcare. Our archaic abortion laws criminalise and vilify women along with their families.
“This study shows that online abortion services are safe and effective.
“However, many local politicians do not trust women to use this medication in an appropriate way.
“Rather, we see the PSNI conducting co-ordinated raids in search of this safe medication while opioid addiction rages around us.
“The PSNI say that they allocate resources based on “threat, risk and harm”. If this is the case, early stage abortion medication should not feature as a policing priority.
“I’m looking forward to reasserting the Green Party’s commitment to the decriminalisation of abortion during this Westminster election campaign.”
