Clare Bailey MLA makes formal complaint following Edwin Poots’ “pedophilia” tweet

Clare Bailey MLA of the Green Party has submitted a formal complaint to the Assembly Commissioner for Standards following recent comments from Edwin Poots MLA.

The twitter comments linked the LGBTQ community with “pedophilia”, prompting the Green Party to launch a petition calling for action against the former Health Minister.

The petition received a staggering 5,000 in three days, convincing Clare Bailey MLA to take formal action.

The South Belfast MLA said:

“The huge response to the Green Party petition shows the level of offence caused by Edwin Poots’ comments.

“To associate the LGBTQ community with paedophilia is grossly offensive and in my mind is a clear breach of the Assembly Code of Conduct.

“The code requires Assembly Members to act in a way that is conducive to promoting good relations by tackling prejudice.

“There is also a requirement on all MLAs to show respect and consideration for others at all times.

“I believe that Edwin Poots’ comments are a clear contravention of the standards expected from MLAs. A full investigation is necessary and this formal complaint to the Commissioner for Standards will kick start that process.”

Clare Bailey concluded:

“We all are painfully aware that the Assembly is not functioning at present. However, the political paralysis should not mean that MLAs can spew out hateful comments without challenge.”
