Clare Bailey MLA calls for Northern Ireland to be a priority in Brexit negotiations

Thursday 10th August

Speaking today at a panel on ‘The Left Speaks on Brexit’ as part of Féile an Phobail, Clare Bailey MLA South Belfast reiterated the Green Party’s commitment to ensuring the people are given their say on any final Brexit deal through a second referendum.

Clare said:

“The Green Party are a proudly pro-European party and are part of a wider Green movement across Europe and globally. Brexit presents an enormous threat to human rights, environmental protections and will have particularly serious repercussions for Northern Ireland.

“It is crucial that Northern Ireland is represented in Brexit negotiations and should be a priority. We need the Assembly up and running now to represent the people here as we are elected to do. We are also pushing for a referendum on the final deal. It should be up to the people to decide whether the deal presented to them for leaving the EU is acceptable, not a Tory government.

“I recognise there are many differing views on the Left in relation to the EU and the future of Northern Ireland, but there is so much more that unites us than divides us and we need to work together to mitigate the risks and seize the opportunities that lie before us.”
