Clare Bailey MLA appeals to Department to release charity funding

Tuesday January 9 2018

Green Party MLA Clare Bailey has urged the Department of Finance to move quickly to release urgently needed funding for charitable causes through the dormant bank account initiative.

“This money is urgently needed by critical services such as Women’s Aid and Nexus, charities which are delivering desperately needed services,” the South Belfast MLA said.

“The services they can offer are being constrained by lack of money and Nexus in particular is going into its reserve funding to try to continue delivering at the same rate, which is not sustainable and will force the charity to close if it continues.

“This extra funding stream is desperately needed money, particularly in the current climate of austerity, and the lack of access to this money will impact most on vulnerable people.

“The scheme is currently being administered across Britain but once again we see services in Northern Ireland suffering due to poor decision making and political stalemate.

“Women’s Aid say that the scheme which has long been promised could help them to save vital services and save lives.

“I am appealing to the Department to do everything in its power to release this money, given the failure of successive ministers to implement the scheme.”
