Clare Bailey delighted as decriminisation of abortion Ten Minute Rule Bill progresses

Tuesday 23 October 2018

Clare Bailey MLA has said she is delighted that an overwhelming majority of MPs have supported the first stage of Diane Johnson MP’s Ten Minute Rule Bill to decriminalise abortion.

The South Belfast MLA said: “I would like to thank Diane Johnson MP for her continuing commitment to human rights and to the women of Northern Ireland.

“The Ten Minute Rule Bill is notoriously difficult to progress but the Reproductive Health (Access to Terminations) Bill received strong support from a host of MPs including Caroline Lucas MP.

“These MPs recognise that the criminalisation of abortion represents an abuse of the rights of women across Northern Ireland.

“Indeed, the human impact of the situation was laid out by Diane Johnson in the Commons when she recounted the testimony of a women forced to travel to England to have a termination.

“Today, we have moved a step closer to ending this cruel and degrading denial of the rights of women and their reproductive health care.”
