Clare Bailey calls out DUP hypocrisy over Scottish letters

Tuesday 20 June 2017

Clare Bailey MLA has accused the DUP of hypocrisy after the Scottish government published correspondence from Arlene Foster and Simon Hamilton showing intervention on Scottish marriage equality issues.

Jeffrey Donaldson MP criticised Nicola Sturgeon in November 2016 after the Scottish First Minster suggested that women from Northern Ireland could travel to Scotland to access free, safe and legal abortions.

The DUP Lagan Valley MP said of that proposal: “The Northern Ireland Executive would never consider interfering in Scottish internal affairs.”

Recently published letters show correspondence between then Ministers Simon Hamilton and Arlene Foster asking that the Scottish government exclude Northern Ireland couples from extending civil partnerships to marriages in that jurisdiction.

Clare Bailey MLA commented: “This shows clear hypocrisy on the part of the DUP. They castigated Nicola Sturgeon for discussing healthcare access to women from Northern Ireland, while Simon Hamilton and Arlene Foster have attempted to pollute Holyrood with their anti-equality agenda.

“The DUP knows no bounds when it comes to suppressing the rights of women and LGBTQ citizens in Northern Ireland.

“I’m glad that these letters have been released and the hypocrisy of the DUP exposed.”
