Citizens’ Assembly a ray of light as darkness creeps across local decision making processes

Wednesday 12 September 2018

Green Party leader Steven Agnew has described a pilot for a Citizens’ Assembly planned for next month as, “a ray of light as darkness creeps across local decision making processes.”

The North Down MLA said: “I welcome the creation of a Citizens’ Assembly and the opportunity for local people to discuss some of the issues that impact on the lives of everyone.

“I believe that people are more capable than many of our politicians in finding consensus and having rationale policy discussion and debate.

“It is important to remember that the advice of the Citizens’ Assembly is non-binding and I’d agree that citizens’ assemblies are no substitute for democratically elected bodies and legislatures.

“However, in the context of the breakdown of devolution and with the Secretary of State set to hand power to unaccountable civil servants, the Citizens’ Assembly is a ray of light as darkness creeps across local decision making processes.”
