Children lose out again as coaching project falls victim to the Stormont stalemate

Wednesday 24 October 2018

Steven Agnew MLA has said that children are losing out as a result of the inability of Sinn Fein and the DUP to restore power sharing.

The comments follow the withdrawal of funding for a primary school sports coaching scheme.

The Department of Education project enabled IFA and GAA coaches to offer sports coaching in schools across Northern Ireland as part at a cost of £1.3 per year.

The leader of the Green Party in Northern Ireland said: “Children are losing out as a result of the inability of Sinn Fein and the DUP to work together.

“They are denied the physical and mental health benefits of taking part in an excellent coaching programme.

“The funding cut also puts 50 highly skilled coaches out of a job in the run up to Christmas.

“The DUP and Sinn Fein will often talk up their commitment to sports and wear their GAA or football colours when it suits them to.

“Yet, it’s their failings that put coaches out of a job and deny children a chance to take part in football or Gaelic games at school.
