Children being let down by Safeguarding Board

Green Party leader Steven Agnew MLA has today, Monday, 15 August 2016, outlined his concerns at the findings of the independent report into the Safeguarding Board in Northern Ireland.

Steven Agnew MLA said,

“Once again children are being let down.

“The Safeguarding Board in Northern Ireland clearly needs to improve in order to protect our most vulnerable children.

“However it is difficult to have confidence in the Safeguarding Board if it does not focus on the key issues.

“The report makes for troubling reading and I am particularly concerned that there was a lack of structured focus on the multi-agency aspects of child protection. This is one of the reasons why I introduced the Children’s Act that places a legal requirement on all agencies to work together.

“I am also concerned that the report was published in February 2016 and has now only come to light. This raises questions over openness and transparency.

“There are many excellent staff working in child protection and in other child-centred organisations. They must be supported to do their job, with leadership needed by the Safeguarding Board.”
