Badger baiting cruel and unnecessary

Five men have gone on trial in connection with alleged badger baiting offences over three years ago.

The men face a number of animal cruelty charges over an alleged incident near Carrowdore, County Down, in 2012.

North Down MLA Steven Agnew said today, Tuesday 29 September 2015,

“Badger baiting is an illegal blood sport and it is only right that the alleged perpetrators are facing prosecution.

“Badgers and their setts are protected by law in Northern Ireland and it is cruel and unnecessary to persecute any animal in the name of sport.

“Not only is harm inflicted on the badgers, the dogs involved are often injured.

“Badger baiting is perpetuated by organised gangs. I would urge all members of the public, including landowners, who see anything suspicious, not to turn a blind eye and report it.

“Suspected wildlife crime should be reported to your local police station, the PSNI on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
