Academic selection report again shows that it’s not a level playing field for our children

Wednesday 06 September 2017

Green Party leader Steven Agnew has said that a new Executive Office report adds further weight to the avalanche of evidence showing that academic selection has a negative impact on educational achievement.

Steven Agnew MLA said:

“Thousands of children started new schools across Northern Ireland as Year 8 pupils during the past fortnight – this report shows that our education system hasn’t provided them with a level playing field.

“The report points to negative impacts of academic selection as creating low self-esteem amongst pupils and favouring the most wealthy in society.

“These are stark findings which add to the avalanche of evidence showing that academic selection has a negative impact on educational achievement.

“We can’t pretend that the current system provides equality of opportunity for children growing up in areas of social and economic deprivation.”

The North Down MLA concluded:

“And, we must not kid ourselves that sustainable, longer-term solutions for the improvement of educational attainment can be provided in the absence of a functioning Assembly and Executive.”
