Public services must be put before party politics when talks resume

Public services must be put before party politics when talks resume

Friday 28 April 2017

Green Party leader Steven Agnew has said that the traditional parties must adopt the right mind set when they resume negotiations after the General Election.

“I’ve heard the traditional parties casting around for an excuse for their lack of progress.

“Sinn Fein blame the DUP, the DUP blame SDLP and now a snap General Election pulls up a process that was going nowhere fast anyway.

“I want the Stormont House negotiations to bring about the restoration of the institutions because I am committed to devolved government in Northern Ireland

“However, rather than getting their recriminations in first, party leaders should come back to the table with a firm commitment to finding resolution.

“Our school pupils and hospital patients will be the real victims of a failure of the parties to come to an agreement.

“Education budget cuts will compromise the opportunities afforded to our children and the health service will fracture under the weight of further budget restrictions”.

Steven Agnew concluded:

“We need to put people first and prioritise public services over party politics”.
